E3: Problem-Solution Essay In this assay you will research the problem of a particular situation (causes, effects, obstacles, …), analyze the current solutions and flaws, and propose a practical solution to minimize the consequences of the problem. The goal of this essay is to convince and persuade your audience that your proposed solution will reduce the consequences of the problem. i Distinguishing features: Purpose: Proposal argument (problem-solution) Length Minimum of 5 (full)-6 pages excluding title page, abstract, and references Format APA (title page, abstract, subtitles or headings for different sections in the paper. and references) Sources At least 4 sources from the library databases At least 1 scholarly journal articles/ books Academic search complete JSTOR Other credible, objective articles from other library databases Opposing viewpoints Issues and controversies CQ researcher Credible, unbiased, objective media sources (found in library databases) New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, BBC, New Yorker, Economist, Associated Press, Foreign Affairs, Atlantic, Politico. Topic: An arguable national or international situation which is a current problem and you are able to argue and analyze the causes, consequences, current solution and flaws and support your claims with strong and credible evidence. You also should be able to propose a practical solution to minimize the consequences of the problem I suggest browsing the topics in online databases such as opposing viewpoints & Issues and Controversies Avoid topics such as abortion rights, death penalty, legalizing marijuana, drugs, ….; instead, select an original topic where you can propose an original and practical solution. Structure Introduction Background information Thesis: The problem/ a major cause for this problem and the significance of finding a practical solution(s) Do not list the solutions in the thesis Problem block (6-7 developed, argumentative paragraphs) Definition and significance Causes Effects and consequences Audience: concerns, objections, your response Obstacles: why hasn’t this problem been solved yet? Transitional paragraph (one brief paragraph) Major points of the problem and the practical solution (one short paragraph—few sentences) Solution block (3-4 paragraphs) Current solution(s) and flaws/ shortcomings Practical solution and benefits for the audience Major objections/ myths/ concerns and responding to these points Although the practical solutions might have minor flaws, Persuade the audience that the practical solutions are better than current solutions Conclusion Summarizing major points: Problem and its significance, major practical solution to resolve this problem If this problem is not solved, what could happen in future? Who, what will be affected? Elements of an arguable body paragraph Developed body paragraphs focused on one central point you intend to argue and prove and apply elements of Toulmin argument Argumentative topic sentence: The main point of the paragraph Context 2 pieces of evidence: summarize and/ or paraphrase; few direct quotations/ cited in APA format Analysis, significance, relevancy of evidence (refer to index of template if needed) Concluding sentence/ transition Clear topic sentences that support your thesis will allow you to choose quotes that serve as SUPPORT, not quotes that are inserted to merely satisfy a requirement. As always, beware of plagiarism; always give credit for ideas that are not yours. The major section of the body paragraphs should include developed topic sentences, supporting details, analysis and elaboration on your thesis and topic sentences not too many quotes; include mainly summaries and paraphrases.
